Occult blood - faeces
(Faecal occult blood)
Suitable Sample:
  • Fresh faeces (see Comments)

Unsuitable Sample:
  • Faecal swab

Minimum Sample Size:
  • 2-3 gm

Turnaround Time:
  • 3 hours, Monday - Saturday

Request/Test Included in:
  • Request test
  • Faecal analysis +/- C&S
Comments:
  • The “occult blood” tests depend on detection of pseudoperoxidase activity of the haeme portion of haemoglobin and myoglobin.
  • Intact erythrocytes – haematochezia – will not cause a positive occult blood test result.
  • Meat-based diets can cause a false positive (particularly red meat such as mutton). This also applies to canned food.
  • Feed a non-meat diet for 3 days before collection of faeces (cottage cheese, rice, pasta).
  • False positives can also occur with foods that contain peroxidases such as beets and tomatoes.
  • The sensitivity of the test increases if 2 - 3 separate faecal collections are tested.

Comments:
  1. Samples should be separated and the serum/plasma stored in the freezer once it reaches Vetpath.
  2. Oestrone (estrone) sulphate is a steroid hormone detectable in the circulation in many species. It can be produced in the gonads, the adrenals and is produced by the foetal-placental unit during pregnancy.
  3. Pregnancy >80 days:  Oestrone sulphate levels rise during pregnancy and are a good indicator of a viable pregnancy. In mares oestrone sulphate is detectable in the maternal circulation from early as 60 days post-mating until foaling.  In the event of foetal death oestrone sulphate disappears rapidly from circulation.
  4. Cryptorchidism in horses 3 yo or older.
  5. Goat pregnancy >50 days post-service
Internal Use Only:
  • Use the ELISA for all stallion/cryptorchid and non-equine samples
  • All pregnancy samples are to be done by ELISA on the following Wednesday unless:
    1.  The sample is stamped "urgent".
    2.  The pathologist requests the rapid test is to be used.
    3.   If there is only one sample for the week and it is a pregnancy test, the scientist should ask Sue/Mary/John and it may be decided to use the rapid test.
